Book Reviews & What Others Are Saying
Review by Jack McGlasson
The Power to Create Change
My favorite genre of book is memoir. Recently, I was invited to read and review a new book, Reflections Along My Life’s Journey: Personal Challenges Lead the Heart Toward Global Health, written by Bill Flocco, with Christine Issel. The recommendation was right on the mark for me in that this book is one of the most intriguing and inspiring memoirs I have ever read. The memoir is not a typical story about someone’s great adventures in the jungles of the Amazon, nor is it a collection of ego driven memories and reflections told by a highly paid, former sports star. Instead, the book is a down to earth and balanced accounting of the true-life adventures, challenges and successes of a humble man driven to be of service to others. One quickly draws from Reflections that Mr. Flocco is a man dedicated to making the world a better place.
The book is essentially divided between Flocco’s two major careers. The first part is about his work in public education and in the educational system. The second, (still ongoing) is his work in Reflexology. In the field of Reflexology, he is a practitioner, teacher, and a major force in the establishment of a global network of trained reflexologists. His efforts along with those of his colleagues have brought healing and pain relief to thousands across the globe.
I will begin with the second part of the book first. In it, Flocco describes how he first learned about reflexology, and by seeing its benefits personally, he decided to help others by becoming a reflexologist himself. On a larger scale, he explains how he has been motivated to teach the practice of reflexology to a much larger audience and so he has taught the practice all over the world. As part of this effort, he and his partners established the World Reflexology Association which has enabled Flocco and others to teach foot, hand and ear reflexology in multiple countries and cultures.
This part of the book also helped me understand that bringing the foot, hand and ear reflexology closer to mainstream medicine has been a challenge. Proponents of Reflexology such as Flocco have battled unnecessary legislation, misunderstanding, and prejudice in their efforts to allow reflexologists to practice freely and appropriately. His anecdotes and reflections about his adventures and struggles throughout the world make for extremely interesting and sometimes heartbreaking reading.
For me though, the first part of Flocco’s working life as described in his book was the most interesting. I am a retired elementary school teacher and Flocco’s journey in the world of public education held me spellbound and kept me turning pages well into the night. Flocco describes becoming involved in the process of teaching and learning first as a classroom teacher. After some time in this role, Flocco recognized some fundamental problems in the educational system that he realized needed to be corrected.
Flocco saw how public schools, teachers themselves and their students have been hampered by politics, debates about essential program funding, less than adequate educator salaries and unfair state and federal expectations. Flocco correctly identified the plight of teachers who have always been expected to instruct, nurture, discipline, and advocate for children in an environment where many classrooms are in disrepair, where students are not supplied with appropriate instructional materials for learning, where there is no funding for school libraries and where, in many cases, children come to school in the morning unfed and hungry.
Always viewing himself as an agent for change, Flocco details how he became an advocate and activist, and an organizer in unions and associations that represented and supported educators. He took on leadership roles in organizations that set out to rectifying these issues by challenging politicians and the status quo. Fortunately for all, he found success in both the Indiana and California public education systems. Flocco and the institutions with which he worked helped to create better and more equitable contracts for teachers and generally improved working conditions for educators and school staff. Additionally, Flocco’s work served students by helping to ensure that schools were in better repair, and that students had needed learning materials. Most importantly, many of the innovations and changes that Flocco and his collaborators made are still positively impacting public education today.
Reflections Along My Life’s Journey, Personal Challenges Lead to Global Health is a fine book that is well written, intriguing and informative and Mr. Flocco’s story is most definitely inspiring. The best part is that the memoir comes with a message. It is that one man working without ego and with positive vision for improvement can be an agent for lasting local and global change.
On the back cover of the current edition of this print on demand book, a statement sums up Mr. Flocco’s life and philosophy;
“Ultimately his goal to bring hope, encouragement, and better health to everyone in the world.”

Growing up, I used to devour biographies of artists and other accomplished people. I loved following the paths they took to arrive at the pinnacle of their careers. When I learned that Bill Flocco had written his memoir, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy. As someone who has known and admired him for years, I was eager to know what sort of upbringing and training produced such an exceptional human. The book did not disappoint me.
Some people will say that if you pay attention to a child’s interests and natural talents, you are peering into their intended destiny. Such is the story evident in Bill Flocco’s Reflections Along My Life’s Journey. His talent for organizing events, motivating others to perform tasks that would positively impact the lives of others, his kindness, tenacity and equanimity was apparent by the age of 15.
Bill shares his rocky beginning in a family incapable of giving him the nurturing care and encouragement necessary for the development of his talent and worth. But with a strong belief in God and a trust that his path would ultimately lead him to his destined place in the world, he managed to attract experiences and adults who supported him along the journey his life would take.
The book begins with Bill’s birth in New Jersey, and follows his adventures and life through Puerto Rico, teaching in the public school system in California, years as an organizational development trainer, his mid-life discovery of reflexology, and the subsequent decisions and actions he took to open the globally-reaching American Academy of Reflexology, establish his role as a founder of the Reflexology Association of California, the Reflexology Association of American, and The World Reflexology Foundation, develop the Integrated Foot Hand and Ear Reflexology model, create ReflexologyWorldResearch.net, conduct the first randomized controlled study of reflexology published in scientific medical literature any place in the world.
Bill’s final ‘reflection’ in the book sums up who this man is to both the field of reflexology and the world-at-large: “It is my belief that a healthy world will also be a kinder peaceful world. A kinder world will be more thoughtful about, and towards, the well-being of its neighbors throughout the world.”
In my humble opinion, Reflections Along My Life’s Journey is a must-read for all reflexologists. Our profession and hundreds of us personally have been blessed by Bill Flocco’s contributions to the world.
Review by Laura Norman,
Author of Feet First: A Guide to Foot Reflexology
Reading Reflections Along My Life’s Journey felt much like sitting down with my dear friend and colleague Bill Flocco and picking up exactly where we left off — sharing the stories that shaped our lives, our Reflexology careers, and our hopes for where Reflexology is headed. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Bill for over forty years, and yes, he even came to my Reflexology Center on occasion to teach my students Ear and Hand Reflexology! I can say without hesitation that Bill and Christine have done extraordinary work in bringing Reflexology to international recognition and earning it well-deserved credibility among health and wellness practitioners around the world.
This book glows with the warmth and honesty of someone who has genuinely lived a full life — navigating unexpected turns, embracing challenges, and finding deeper purpose with each new chapter. From his earliest years through decades of teaching, advocacy, and global outreach, Bill shares it all with a generous and open heart.
He begins with his childhood and school years, giving readers a vivid sense of the experiences that forged his values and his deep commitment to education. As someone who has known Bill professionally for so long, it was particularly meaningful to see how those early influences flowed naturally into his work as a high school teacher and passionate advocate for educators. His years championing the rights of fellow teachers reveal a man who truly believes in fairness, service, and lifting others up — values that run like a golden thread throughout his entire life story.
One of the most compelling sections of the book is Bill’s midlife pivot. Many people talk about reinventing themselves; Bill actually did it. His transition into teaching Reflexology and immersing himself in the world of health and wellness is a testament to both courage and an insatiable love of learning. It’s the kind of story that makes you want to take a leap of your own.
What truly sets this memoir apart is Bill’s refreshing candor. He doesn’t package his life as a tidy tale of unbroken success. Instead, he shares the uncertainties, the hard lessons, and the moments of doubt right alongside the triumphs — and that honesty is exactly what makes the book so relatable and so real. For those of us who know Bill personally, you’ll smile with recognition: the thoughtful, reflective man in these pages is the same one we’ve always known and admired.
At its heart, this book is a beautiful reminder that life rarely travels in a straight line — and that’s perfectly okay. Bill’s journey shows how personal struggles and unexpected opportunities can guide us toward work that is both meaningful and genuinely transformative.
For readers meeting Bill for the first time through these pages, you’re in for a treat. His story offers a heartfelt and inspiring glimpse into a life devoted to learning, teaching, and serving others. Be sure to savor the Upon Reflection moments woven throughout the book — those pause-and-ponder passages are real gems, and as Bill himself would appreciate, hindsight truly is 20/20.
Bill, as for your vision for the future of Reflexology — it is nothing short of inspirational. And, the best is still yet to come!
Review by Linda Frank NBCR, NCRED
I once read that “Storytelling is our obligation to the next generation”. On that note, Bill Flocco has obliged in spades by sharing with us in Reflections his stories about his life, career(s), political and professional reflexology advocacy, forays into manual touch modalities, and creation of a reflexology modality that took him around the world interfacing with other reflexology greats and teaching those as thirsty for knowledge as he is. (add LF “bio”)
A rich read about a rich life.
The style of Reflections reminds me of Aesop’s tales, but without any moralizing! Just stories that shine with meaning – not only for the author, but potentially for all of us.
Reflections has many components of a master class in reflexology, reflexology advocacy, reflexology educating, and the discoveries that can be made when teaching/traveling abroad. And life. You will come away from reading it with an abundance of learning.
A literary master class in reflexology, reflexology advocacy, reflexology instruction, and life.
Ever the educator, Bill’s book is a master class in reflecting on life, reflexology, reflexology advocacy, and educating others. You will come away from reading Reflections with an abundance of learning.
Some of what I read in Bill Flocco’s Reflections will live in my heart forever. And I will be a better reflexologist, a better advocate for reflexology, and a better reflexology educator for having read this book.

This is a great book and wellworth reading! Bill Flocco shares his incredibly interesting life storystarting
with his childhood going all the way to the present. I reallyappreciated his “Upon Reflection” feature that was
used throughout thebook. He offers much wisdom. He’s clearly grateful for thechallenges in his life, using them as opportunities for growth. Billworked
tirelessly on the Flocco Method, which integrates foot, hand, and ear reflexology. As someone newer to
reflexology, I was also interested in learning about thehistory of state, national, and international
organizations as well aslegislation and the role he played in all of it.
Bill increased the scopeand the
professionalism of reflexology. I am grateful to Bill for hislifetime of hard work, his diligence, his
dedication, his intelligence, and hisability to be inclusive of everyone he meets. His contributions to
thefield of reflexology are so vast and impressive. His goal was to sharereflexology with the world and he
has done that successfully! Thank youBill! You and this book are an inspiration!
